Urban economics: (Economics and Environment in Denver)
Urban economics is the study of allocation of resources in all economic activities related to urban areas. As world’s population is increasingly becoming urban, growing number of people are moving into cities around the world. In this globalized world, the role of cities, metropolitan areas & local government organizations have become stronger. Impacts of globalization have become more visible in the form of urbanization.
First we will identify the areas which belong to the study of urban economics such as land, market forces, education, public transport, housing market, government expenditure & public policy, economic competiveness, Climate policies, employment growth & labor supply.
Market forces in the development of a city: This is related to how firms & households decide location which results in development of a city. The market performance is also dependent on geographical location as market performance of a firm located in geographically isolated region is different than a firm located in a concentrated region.
Integrated Economic policy: Urban problems & public policy are related to each other as economic policy is mostly implemented at urban levels. An integrated economic policy is the only way to avoid decision being made under wrong assumptions. The economic policy should include ecological & social considerations & set short & long run goals.
Urban transportation: This plays an important role in urban economics as it affects every other sector of the economy. It defines land use pattern & accessibility of different locations in a city. The efficiency of public transport systems such as buses & rail play an important role in the economic growth of an urban area.
Government expenditure & expenses: the local government expenditure & expenses have a great impact on the development of an urban area as it analyzes the efficiency of local governments.
Hosing & infrastructure: The location choices of hosing & other infrastructure & hosing policies impact the market structure of a city.
So in this manner we can split the topic of ‘Economics and Environment in Denver’’ to subtopics & I would be interested in conducting surveys on field related to different dimensions of economy discussed above.
