Radiation therapy (RT) us the required treatment for the patient who suffered from cancer in order to destroy the cancer cells through radiation .

The nausea ,vomiting ,diarrhea and appreciate are the highly common side effects of this treatment. The teaching plan for a patient which is required are

  • Diet:Encourage the patient to eat small and frequent meals than opting for large meals. Foods which can trigger nausea should be avoided. Includes fruits and vegetables in the diet.
  • Propped up position after eating to prevent regurgitation
  • Avoid foods which has string smell
  • Bland ,fiber rich diet can improve digestion as well as ease diarrhea
  • Fluid should be consumed adequately (2500-3000ml/day)
  • Dry foods can be taken
  • Avoiding milk based foods in case of diarrhea
  • Medication for nausea and vomiting should be consumed by patient as per order
  • No foods prior to RT
  • Protect head by covering or using a hat to prevent direct effect of sun . Mild shampoo can be used for head hygiene .Provide psychological support .Hair wig can be used if patient is comfortable
  • Report to health care provider if there bowel movement is more than six times a day.
