Using the nursing process, develop a teaching plan for a new mother who is
learning how to breastfeed her first child. Include all steps of the nursing process.
● Include information you would provide about how to breastfeed (position, letting-down reflex, nipple care).
● Include information on recognizing symptoms of potential complication (infection, mastitis)
○ Preventing complication (e.g., mastitis).
○ Self-implemented treatments (warm compress,
medications)
○ When to seek health care.
● Include information you would provide about personal diet and hydration as well as information on supplementing infant feedings with non-breastmilk options.
ANS I Information about breastfeed
1. Position- a nurse should give information to mother on how to get herself into a comfortable position, show mother how to hold a baby straight, with baby's head and body turned to face her breast and with baby's nose opposite her nipple. A mother should hold baby supporting the whole body not just neck and shoulders.
2. Letting down reflex- milk ejection reflex , in which the baby while sucking may triggers tiny nerves in nipple, which may cause stress to mother, as letdown may not work well , then Nurse should provide support and encouragement, on how to take care of breastfeeding.
3. Nipple care- sometimes the baby may bite and pull back the nipple, then a mother must air-dry nipples or dab them gently with a towel, changing nursing pads frequently may Reduce the risk of bacterial and fungal infections including thrust.
ANS 2. Symptoms
1. Preventive complications like mastitis is a painful condition for mother , a nurse should encourage mother to continue breastfeed,if a mother has mastitis then it will not harm baby, even if infections are present. If the blocked milk ducts that occurs in milk statis, a women may form breast abscess which is a severe complication.
2. Self treatment- a warm compress may increase circulation, open milk ducts , in this a mother facing complications may apply a hot, moist compress to breast which encourage milk start flowing.
3. HEALTH care - a mother should regularly go for medical check-up as if some symtare left untreated it can cause pain and discomfort.
ANS 3 DIET - a mother should eat food which are high in protein like eggs, beans etc. Also include whole grains, fruits and vegetables, if a mother eat a variety of foods it will change flavor of breast milk . A mother should drink 1/2 or 3/4 of an. Ounce of water , which keep mother hydrated enough to produce right amount of breast milk
Supplements infants feeding
The supplements consists of container filled with expressed breast milk, donor breast milk or infants formula . The container connects to a tube that's secured at the top of nipple.
