what are the actions of general and local anesthetic
agents
Action of General anesthesia :
General anaesthesia involves administering combined general anesthetic agents which causes central nervous system depression causing analgesia and unconsciousness. Thus there is no consciousness , pain and cannot remember what took place in the surgery. Automatic nervous system and the muscle reflexes are also blocked during general anesthesia.
The person needs to be incubated and the mechanical ventilation is provided via ventilator during general anesthesia.
Example of drugs used in general anesthesia :
Propofol, succinyl cholinesterase, ketamine , nitrous oxide.
Local anaesthesia :
Local anaesthesia is administered with local anaesthetic agents which produce analgesia of the local body part required during the procedure. There is no systemic central nervous system depression and hence there is no loss of consciousness and the person is aware of the surroundings .
Drugs used in local anaesthesia are :
Midazolam, lidocaine, procaine, chloroprocaine .
