Of the hormones secreted by the posterior pituitary, if you had to choice one to be in a "hypo" state which one would it be and why? What are the treatment options for this "hypo" state and what monitoring would need to be completed?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The two major hormones secreated by the post pituitary are:

Vasopressin (ADH).

Oxytocin.

If i have a choice, i would like to choose oxytocin to be in hypo state.

It is because the main actions of oxytocin are on uterus and breast.

Oxytocin causes strong uterine contractions during labour.

Oxytocin acts on area near the nipple and helps ejecting milk.

Oxytocin have no known normal function in males.

On the other hand, vasopressin is very important to the body as it regulates tonicity of body fluids.

Vasopressin prevent the excess of fluid loss through urine, increasing water permeability and decreasing urine formation.

Treatment options for hypo states :

1) Intranasal oxytocin administration- oxytocin is not effective orally as it is destroyed in git.

Body produces oxytocin naturally, to increase the levels of oxytocin, the following is done

2) Try Yoga.

3) listen to music.

4) spend time with friends.

5) medicate

6) Take oxytocin promoting supplement:

Vitamin C

Vitamin B complex

Vitamin D

Magnesium.

5HTP.

Tryptophan.

Monitoring :

Moniter the levels of oxytocin.

Moniter blood pressure fluctuations.

Moniter the frequency of uterine vontracontra and blood pressure in case of pregnency.

Check for withdrawal of some symptoms associated with hypo state of oxytocin.

Inappropriate doses must be avoided as it produces dangerous tachycardia.
