Nursing is a profession in which there are chances of more work place hazards. Some of the work place hazards are us following.
1.Physical hazards
It includes ionizing radiations like X Ray's, gamma rays ,beta particles ,alpha particles.
Non ionizing radiation like microwaves ,ultraviolet rays, infrared rays.
These can lead to cancer , aplastic anemia and genetic mutations.
2.Chemical hazards
Local reaction from sanitizers and irritants.
Inhaling anesthetic gases like nitrogen, chloroform, ether.
Ingestion of metals like lead , mercury cobalt etc.
3.biological hazards
It includes communicable diseases like tuberculosis, covid 19 ,hepatitis, chickenpox . Bloodborne diseases like HIV / AIDS.
4.Psychological hazards
It includes sexual harassment, bullying, burnout work related stress , and violence. These can lead to depression, anxiety disorders, frustration, irritability and dissatisfaction.
Prevention of occupational hazards
1.Proper nutrition - well balanced diet,safe water supply.
2.prevention and control of communicable diseases - health education, infection control practices , isolation practices, use of PPE, hand washing etc
3.Enviromental sanitation - Adequate lighting, ventilation, proper waste disposal, toilet facilities, food hygiene.
4 . Periodic health check up and follow up - Routine health examination follow up and screening.
These are the work related hazards in nursing and their prevention.
