Explain project constraints in a practical setting
Key terms
1) Constraints: A Constraint could be defined as a "Limit or Restriction".
2) Project Constraints: A Project Constraints could be defined as restrictions that defines projects limitations
For example: The dead line to hand over the project is a constraint
Project constraints in a practical setting are:
# Memory Tip: Six Project constraints can be remembered as "CRaB QueST"
C-Cost, R-Risk, B-Benefits, Q-Quality, S-Scope,T-Time
1)Cost: Involves the limitation of total input of fund and resources for the project
Example:A project could be started only on the basis of capital fund invested, based on capital the type quality of materials purchased and used will be different (Think of five star hotel building and normal hotel building).
2) Risk: It includes proper delivery of materials to rolling of funds
Example: For project completion in dead line the raw materials to be received at proper time there is a lot of risk in purchase and supply of raw materials. The main risk in project is rolling of fund for proper purchase of materials
3) Benefits: Its explains the value of project. Without proper justification for the project it could not be started
Example: A flat is built near beach the main benefit to be shown is sea view with this single benefits the project get more market value as many people thinks having a sea view flat as luxury
4) Quality: It’s a constraint which defines how the project should be hand over
Example: If a project has a constraint of laying high quality vinyl floor of specific grade ,colour and brand it’s the quality contraint, because its unable to bypass the rule which affect the quality of project so the same brand and grade material to be used over floor to show up the quality of work
5) Scope: The specific goals, deliverables and tasks that define the boundaries of the project involves the scope of project
Example: When the furniture to be delivered in site is a scope
6)Time: It’s the major constraint of project, Time schedule for each plan to be executed and final day of delivery should be as per time slot which is fixed
Example: Project hand over date and completion of phases of project.
For every project these are the basic constraints in a practical setting.
