What are the challenges in evaluation of health information systems into three areas involving the complexity of the object of evaluation, the complexity of the evaluation project, the motivation to perform evaluation and a framework to help address these challenges
1) The complexity of the object of evaluation -
Challenges :-
In the evaluation of the object, information technology takes a lot of time. Sometimes it become difficult to implement the technology and then measure the effect immediately. The workflow takes a lot of time to fully utilize new tools and possibilities.
Solution :-
To address the problem it is important to describe IT environment as well as describing the software and hardware. It is needed to evaluate the results carefully and then do the documentation.
2) The complexity of evaluation project -
Challenges :-
The evaluation project is highly complex in nature and it also depends a lot on the external environmental influences such as legislation, economy, patients etc. And due to this dependency on external factors, it becomes difficult to analyze the planning and execution study. Besides, clear-cut evaluation criteria too can't be identified.
Solution :-
It is true that IT is a good way to measure the outcome of the quality of patients but it is recommended to start the evaluation process before the implementation of Information Technology. It is also important to give enough time to the decision making.
3) The motivation to perform evaluation -
Challenges :-
To motivate the evaluation performance, it becomes difficult sometimes to find suitable participants as it takes a lot of effort to find them. One of the main challenges is to get sufficient funding for the evaluation study. The participants sometimes not feels motivated to do the study become of fear of negative results.
Solution :-
More than one approach can be used to increase the number of participants. The suitable participants can be directly addressed to get the opportunity to approach them. To motivate the participants, feedback system can be implemented.
