SPECIFIC ACTIONS UTILIZED BY THE INTRAOPERATIVE TEAM TO MAKE
SURE THE PATIENT IS SAFE, IN TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY.
Intra opeative care by the health team assures utmost safety and
comfort for tge patient, throughout the procedure. For that, they
may be using the following methods:
- Continuous respiratory and cardiac assessment and ensuring
sufficient ventillatory support. (Supportive oxygenation,
Availability of experts in airway management and ACLS). RATIONALE:
in total knee replacement, the preferred mode of anaesthesia is
general anaesthesia. While giving general anaesthesia, there are
chances for respiratory depression as well as cardiovascular
irritation. Continuous monitoring of respiratory status by frequent
auscultation of breath sounds as well as monitoring by pulse
oxymetry is essential to avoid any such respiratory complications.
If at all any complications arises, experts in airway management
and ACLS will effectively manage the situation
- MAINTAIN A STRICT ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE: the intra operative team
follows strict aseptic technique, as the surgery is an invasive
procedure, chances of cross infection are high. To avoid cross
infection and related complications, it is mandatory to maintain a
strict aseptic technique(sterile) throughout the procedure
- USES THE BEST AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS. ALSO, THE
SURGEON IS AWARE OF THE COMPLICATIONS. As intraoperative fractures
and ligamental tires are one of the main complications of total
knee replacement, it is important to use improved ancillary
materials and equipment for the surgery. The surgeon also should
possess thorough knowledge on the complications, so that he can
prevent it
- PAD THE AREAS OF OPERATING TABLE THAT COMES IN CONTACT WITH
BONY PROMINENCES OF CLIENT. As the client is undergoing general
anaesthesia, client will not be able to respond to any pain
stimuli. The patient will be in a temporary paralyzed state, so
that client couldnt explain the pain sensations. Hence inorder to
avoid hematomas or injuries, the parts of operation table that
comes in direct contact with the clients bony prominences may be
padded
Thus, Provision of a safe environment and safety equipment
during the procedures further reduces complications
