1. Suppose you are having difficulty managing a small group of subordinates who work in an office 1,000 miles away from your home base. What kinds of changes in structure, technology, and people can be implemented to more closely supervise these distant employees?
2. Think of the organization in which you currently work—specifically, the work group or department with which you are most closely affiliated. How would you characterize this unit with respect to division of labor, span of control, and centralization?
1. A small group of subordinates who work in an office 1,000 miles away from my home bas so I had a difficulty in managing these subordinates Hence the kinds of changes should be done to manage efficiently as -
· Change in structure – The structure should be decentralized. As I manage the people far away from my place then it is better that the group can itself make the work and manage it and then later, I am involved in this process.
· Changes in Technology- As the portable laptops has been given to them as well as communicating device so that they can contact anytime.
· Changes in people- The more skilled or Experienced member among them have to be allocated a leadership charge of the whole group. Individual tasks have been identified by this immediate leader of the team. All the members should report to this head.
2. I was associated with my immediate head of the team who was Team Lead. There are more than 20 teams in the office. The department was sales. Here, the division of labor is equally distributed among all the team members. All the members should report only to immediate manager. Then manager report to ABM (Associate Business Manager) and they in turn refer to the Floor Manager. Hence the process is decentralized as every team has an opportunity to plan according to their own and decide what suits best in output generation process. So, within team the span of control is much higher whereas other teams work separately. Hence, the whole process was decentralized.
