Improvement requires change, but not every change is an improvement. The approach used by most organizations is to adopt a strategy for managing change and train their staff to facilitate the improvement process. How would you engage front line staff in QI programs when the day-to-day functions alone can be so consuming?

Answer:

QI program are programmes with systematic activities that are organized and implemented by an institution to monitor, assess, and improve its quality of health care. It is an imperative step to ensure high quality and cost effective care. Front line staffs are vital resources of an organidsation. Their involvement is crucial in every steps. Front line workers are very busy with in their daily works. But quality is better than quantity. As a first step there should be a regular morning team meeting in which doctors, nurses and other clinical team members can discuss about the daily scenario of patient care. The head of the institution should clearly monitor day today activities from them. Make this as a daily routine and a part of work. So it would be easy to capture issues in that daily team meeting. Another important thing is proper knowledge updation in staffs. Dedicate one hour per week (shift criteria) for education purpose. Outside faculty or staffs can take sessions. Always get feedback from staff and exit interview from staff who are resigning from institution. Always keep registers, patient records, medicine records properly. Head of each department are responsible to evaluate the same. Number of patients and procedures should be monitored by heads. Involve all frontline staff in decision making. Always conducts internal auditing and quality check to find out the faults and involve staffs in taking decisions to correct them. Select a representative from each department. Seek help of external consultants to help frontline workers in developing new clinical interventions and to improve the effectiveness of existing ones.
