C) Digestion or the digestive process is the process of breakdown of complex insoluble food molecules into smaller particles that can be absorbed by the body to provide us with energy.
The process is accomplished in 5 stages namely:
1) Ingestion : it is the process of taking bolus food into the mouth. It is the first step of the digestion.
2) mechanical digestion : the second step is mechanical digestion where the food particles are cut and chewed by out teeth and is mixed with saliva that makes it easier to swallow.
3) chemical digestion : varoius enzymes act upon the swallowed food in the stomach. The enzyme are amylase, lipase, proteinase etc.
4) absorption : it is the process in which the body absorb and uses the substances for producing energy. Absorption is.mostly carried out in the lower segment of small intestine.
5) excretion : the last stage of digestion is excretion or elimination. The undigested food or waste products needs to be excreted from the body. The feces before excretion are stored in rectum which is the last part of the large intestine.
