Adult day care services provides daily nursing care and social opportunities for elderly people who cannot be left alone.
Adult day care services are expensive, which provide respite and enables family members to carry on daily activities , while the older person is at the day care centre.
There are some health programmes and laws which was established in1960's .They are very much helpful for the older adults.
They are:-
1. Medicare.
2. Medicaid.
3. The older Americans Act.
4. Supplemental security income (SSI).
5.Social security ammendments.
6.Title XX social services legislation.
The older Americans Act mandated creation of a federal aging network. Which resulted in establishment of Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs).It is a national system of social services and network for the elderly.
The main services provided by AAAs are:-
- Providing adult day care services.
- Assess the need for adults and provide information , referral and transportation.
- The case management.
- Providing home maker services.
-Providing nutritional education and congregate meals.
- Providing legal services.
-Providing senior centres.
- The Implementation of part time community work.
These agencies provide care mostly for adults with low income,ethnic minority,rural living and frail elders who are at risk for institutionalization.
Medicare
It is founded by the federal government .It provides the expenses for in patient hospitalization,Physician care, home health services and skilled nursing care in a nursing facility.
Medicaid
It is founded jointly by federal and state government. It provides care for poor.It covers 46% of nursing home costs .
The patient self determination Act (PSDA) in1990's ,a federal law to govern adult day care services. It enhances residents autonomy by increasing their involvement in health care decision making
laws and regulations are helpful for functioning of adult day care services.
