An 8 kg infant requires a drug to run at 1 mL/hr continuously and delivers 4 mcg/kg/min of drug. Calculate the milligrams of drug that must be added to a 100 mL D5W intravenous infusion solution?
( 4 mcg / kg min ) = ( 4 mg / 1000 ) / kg.min
= 0.004 mg / kg.min
for 8 kg = ( 0.004 mg / kg.min ) x 8 kg
= 0.032 mg / min
mass / volume = 0.032 mg / min ) / 1 mL / 60 min
= 1.92 mg / mL
for 100 mL = 1.92 x 100
= 192 mg
drug needed = 192 mg
