Order: 5% D 0.45 NSS 1000ml to infuse at 175ml/hr. The infusion set delivers 15 gtts/ml. How many drops/minute? (round to nearest whole number)
Infusion rate ( gtts/min) = total volume(ml) × drop factor(gtts/ml) /total time (minutes)
In this question , total volume to infuse is 1000 ml
If rate is 175ml/hr , that means 175ml is to be infuse in 1 hour
So , 175ml infused in = 1 hour
Then 1000ml will be infused in = 1× 1000/175 = 5.7 hours
Thus 1000 ml to be infused in 5.7 hours ( in 1 hour = 60 min so in 5.7 hours = 5.7×60 minutes)
And drop factor is 15 gtts/ml
Drip rate or infusion rate in drops /minute ( gtt= drops) = total volume (ml) ×drop factor ( gtt/ml)/total time (minutes)
=> 1000× 15/ 5.7×60 = 15000/342= 43.8
Round off will be 44 thus answer is 44 gtts/min
