If 1 L of a parental fluid is to be infused over a 12 hr period using an infusion set that delivers 20 drops/mL, what should be the rate of flow in drops per minute? Round to the nearest whole number.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Given the volume of iv fluid =1L (1000 ml)

Time = 12hrs

Drop factor =20drops / ml

By the equation

Infusion rate (R) =

volume of fluid × drop factor/(time in hrs×60)

R= 1000 × 20 / ( 12× 60)

R= 20000/720

R= 27.77( rounded to whole number)

Then R = 28

Thus rate of flow = 28 drop per min .
