INFORMED CONSENT

It is a process of getting permission from the patient before performing any procedure especially surgery.

Six areas or informations that should be given to the patient when securing informed consent for lumpectomy.

Risk of an untreated lumbectomy

The goal of the surgery is to remove all the lumbs from the breat, which demanda surgical treatment. So it does not spread the area of the breast,in your armpit or elsewhere in your body.Without the treatment or with an inadequate treatment, your risk of recurrent or progressive lumb formation increases. It it turns to breast cancer eventually the death is expected if the treatment is not performed.

Description of the procedure

Lumpectomy- The formed lump is removed or the area around the breast lump will be removed if needed.

Alternative Treatment

  1. Modified radical mastectomy-The biggest disadvantage of this treatment is that the breast is removed. The lympnodes in the armpit are also removed.
  2. Sentional node biopsy

Possible complications of major surgery

  1. Bleeding - It is a problem that could happened any time the skin is cut.The need for blood transfussion is rare.
  2. Infection - We take special care to prevent the infection but it is always a posibility. An infection can delay further treatmment and prolong healing.
  3. Reactions to medications - This could be many things from minor rash to possible death.
  4. Reactions to anesthesia and surgery - This could show up the heart attack, blood clots, pneumonia, sore throat or in rare cases death.
  5. Poor wound healing - Breakdown of the incision

Possible complications of lumpectomy

  1. Breast deformity
  2. Numbness on the side of the arm
  3. Nipple inversion
  4. Chronic breast pain or tenderness
  5. Seroma formation (collection  of fluid beneath the wound)
