A nurse is preparing a heparin infusion for a client. The perscription reads: 25,000 units of heparin 0.9% sodium chloride 250 mL to infuse at 800 units/hr. What rate should the nurse set their infusion pump?
Dose to infuse = 800 units/hr
Total units = 25000
Quantity of dose available = 250 mL
Infusion pump rate = (Dose to be infused x Quantity of dose available) / Total units = ( 800x 250) / 25000 = 8 mL/hr
So, the nurse should set the infusion pump rate at 8 mL/hr
