The client is receiving a heparin infusion of 50,000 units in 250 mL of D5W over a 18-hour period. How many mL/hr will be administered? (Can you please show your work with fractions as well? I saw someone answer this somewhere else but the way they worked it out I did not understand it. )

Solutions

Expert Solution

Heparin Infusion = 50,000 units

Total Volume of Infusion= 250 ml

Total Time of Infusion = 18 hrs

In 18hrs patient is Administered with 250 ml D5W containing heparin

So, in 1 hr = The patient will receive (250/18)ml/hr of fluid.

OR

Rate of Infusion= Total Volume of Infusion/ Total time taken

= 250 ml / 18 hrs = 13.90 ml/hr

Hence the patient receives heparin with rate of 13.9 hour/ml.
