This week, you have read about the rhetorical appeals of credibility, reason, and emotion and the role of information literacy in responsible research. For your initial post this week, find a current event article from a reputable news outlet and provide an academic summary. In your summary, you must include the following.
It was reported by the Geneva Reuters, that the World Health Organization i.e. WHO on Tuesday acknowledged that there has been evidences emerged regarding the spread of the novel coronavirus through air as a medium. This was right after a group of scientists urging the WHO to update its guidelines regarding the same.
The WHO previously argued that the COVID-19 which is a respiratory disease spreads through small droplets which are expelled from the nose and mouth of an infected person which would then sink to ground.
“We have been talking about the possibility of airborne transmission and aerosol transmission as one of the modes of transmission of COVID-19,” this was told by Maria Van Kerkhove, who is the technical lead on the COVID-19 pandemic at the WHO.
It was reported that 239 scientists across 32 countries shows evidence that shows floating virus particles which can infect people who breathe in the same. And this is why they were urging the WHO to update the guidelines.
“We wanted them to acknowledge the evidence,” was said by Jose Jimenez, who is a chemist at the Colorado University.
They also claimed that the WHO officials were not ready to listen to the claims and evidence put forth by the scientists even after talking with them multiple times. And in reply to this, the WHO personnel’s told that there was evidence regarding the spread of disease through air, but said the same was no definitive. They also added that there are possibilities of spreading through air in very specific conditions, crowded, closed, poorly ventilated settings that have been described, cannot be ruled out. They also claimed that further evidences are required regarding the same and are still working on the same.
The WHO is also claiming that if the pandemic was said to be airborne this would create extra panic situation among the population and there would be panic buying of many things including the n95 masks which would also make it difficult in getting health care workers also work in the hospital.
The credibility, reason and emotion appeals operating in the article are with respect to the article being reported by the ‘Reuters’ which is one of the trusted news outlet having its centers and workers spread around the globe. And also the fact that the evidence regarding the disease being airborne was made by almost 239 scientist across 32 countries which increases the dependability and transparency of the study.
Here it can also be seen that the evidences was kept before the audience with regard to proper numbers and reasons. There are also claims regarding WHO not acknowledging the evidence put forth by the scientists and the WHO also is not denying the same. They have instead given explanation for denying or not considering the same.
