As we know that each and every person has two sphers in life that is public sphere and private sphere. The basic distinction between them is that the public sphere is the realm of politics where strangers come together to engage in the free exchange of ideas, and is open to everyone, whereas the private sphere is a smaller, typically enclosed realm (like a home) that is only open to those who have permission to enter it. In public sphere each and every body can interfere but not in matters of private spheres. Private sphere is the personal sphere of an individual.

In the realm of public and private sphere there emerged a new concept as separate sphere. The doctrine of "separate spheres" glorified women's role in caring for the home and family, guarding religious and moral values while men went into the public spheres to earn money and participate in politics. Smaller families and more leisure time for middle-class families also emphasized children's development, including new public schools open to all.

The private sphere is mainly related with the family matters and public sphere is related with the common discussion, ideas etc. In the USA the women and and black colour people were not allowed to participate in the public spheres. The time has changed now each and every one is treated equally in the realm of life. There is no more discrimination on the grounds of colour, race, gender, sex etc. The people from all backgrounds are allowed in public spheres.

The two concepts of public and private spheres can be traced back to Greeks. As we know that pravite sphere is free from government influence while as public sphere is mainly influenced by government influence. However, the boundary between the public and private sphere is not fixed; instead, it is flexible and permeable, and is always fluctuating and evolving. With the change in time the two spheres of public and private have gone substantial changes.

Hope you got the answer.

Kindly comment for further explanation.
