Choose one of the disorders in the DSM-5. Identify 2 clinical measures that can be used as part of a psychiatric/clinical interview when evaluating for this disorder. For instance, there may be a clinical measure, such as the Beck Depression Inventory, that has been researched for it's effectiveness in assessing depression. You can find examples of clinical measures used for specific diagnoses at the end of each chapter in The Clinical Assessment Workbook by Pomeroy. They may also be called Assessment Instruments or Standardized Measures.
You will then be researching articles that discuss and evaluate each clinical measure.
For EACH measure,
Discuss the usefulness of the measure for assessment purposes for the disorder discussed.
You need to specify the reliability coefficient.
Identify what types of validity were assessed and give a brief description.
Identify the subjects used in the study that assessed the reliability and validity.
Specify the type of reliability that was assessed and give a brief description; identify who developed the measure and for what purpose.
Identify the various sub-scales of the measure and the constructs they assess.
One of the disorders in the DSM-5 is Bipolar Disorder.Bipolar disorder is a mental condition wherein an individual experiences extreme emotions of depression and elation.Bipolar disorder is also know as manic depressive illness.
As there are no specific biological markers for identify bipolar disorder, certain semistructured assessment tools are incorporated when evaluating an individual for the same.A few commonly used clinical measures are:
1.Schedule for Affective Disorders And Schizophrenia (SADS):
SADS involves a series of psychoanalytic criterias and thresholds along with numerous symptom relating scales to further analyse and correlate an individual’s symptoms, so as to properly give diagnosis. In SADS, the same set of interview questions are asked regardless of the presenting problems. The excess data is then used to determine the proper diagnosis of the same.SADS follows a more flexible approach rather than a conservative, structured approach, paving the way for a more accurate and intricate diagnosis.
2.Structured interview for DSM-5:
Structured Interview for DSM-5 or SCID is a rather semistructured form of interview, usually carried out by a clinical or trained mental health professional. SCID is used to analyse dimensional personality assessments. It has shown to be highly effective in the diagnosis and assessment of bipolar disorder.
