Discuss the DSM-V and how this is used to diagnosis disorders. Do you agree or disagree that individuals with mental disorders should be labeled?

Solutions

Expert Solution

DSM-V is used to diagnose mental disorders in an efficient manner. It essentially consists a lot of relevant and insightful informaiton about the disorder like symptoms and important descriptions. It also has a lot of important statistics which might turn out to be of great help to professionals. It contains statistics relating to the age and gender group which might be affected the most at the hands of the disorder. Availability and accessibility of this information proves to be of great help when diagnosing disorders and that is essentially the manner in which it is used.

It is indeed true that labeling mental disorders can sometimes do some harm but it should also be understood that the requirement of labels only arises because of a large set of information which needs to be categorized in one or the other way. This is to be done to increase the accessibility of the information. Therefore, it is a necessary evil.
