Briefly describe the strategies of DNA binding proteins to ensure their DNA binding specificity.
There are two type of proteins for the binding of DNA. Histone and non histone proteins play an important role in the condensation of DNA into chromosomes . Histone proteins are basic in nature . A protein acquire charge depending on the the type of amino acids in the protein chain . Histone proteins are rich in in basic amino acids such as lysine and arginine. lysine and arginine have positive charge in their side chain. The histone proteins are are organised into 8 molecules known as histone octamer. The DNA wrap around this octamer the DNA wrap around 1.75 round around the octamer . That's H1 histone protein it is important for stabilizing the octamer complex . The structure is known as nucleosome. This appears like beads on string appearance in X Ray experiments . The condensation of DNA at higher levels requires additional sets of proteins known as non histone proteins.
