Unlike natural disasters,Man- made disasters involve human
intent, negligence or error /failure in human system .It can include
material spill, mining accidents ,explosion, acts of terrorism
,ground water contamination etc.For example September 11,world
trade center aftermath, the camfire of 2018 in California.
There are specific guidelines in conducting disaster
research.
Pros
- initiating data soon will provide actual
baseline data
- better care to the affected from research finding
- knowledge related to unique group made available
- help survivors to connect with available support services
- help in data management, preparing and understanding the impact
of disaster
- unique opportunity to study behavioral health impact on varied
populations
Cons
- face unique methodological challenges
- affected group will be poorly enumerated and difficult to
follow-up
- ethical concerns in conducting study such as ethical treatment
of vulnerable populations, protection of privacy, informed
consent
- may not get enough time to plan research, time constraints in
developing protocols
- immediate data collection not possible
- chance of distortion of data or falsify data to get
compensation
- sampling error due to underrepresentation or over
representation of participants
