Blanchard Model

The Blanchard model is a situational leadership model.This model was conducted by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard in the year 1970. According to this model, There is no particular leadership style, a wise and successful leader can make an optimal leadership method based on the situation and follower maturity. The Follower maturity is the ability of the group. According to Blanchard model, Goals determination, Capacity to making a wise decision and education are the main factors that can make a leader ideal and succesfull.

Pros of Blanchard Model

  • This model is very easy to apply.
  • This theorey helps to focus on some overlooked important factors like Maturity and Competence.
  • Applying this model can make the group environment comfortable and very much effective
  • This model helps to increase the group awareness. As situational leaders should to be aware for any kind of situation, so this model helps to increase the awareness in the group.
  • Blanchard model is basically a flexible and Intuitive approach, this model can movtivates the group member to achive the success.

Cons of the Blanchard Model

  • The major disadvantage of Blanchard model is that it not be applicable for all the group members. Such as this is not applicable for Managers and Administrators in a group who are holding limited powers. This model is only applicable in a leadership position.
  • This model is not so applicable in some specific situation. It is not applicable in some situation which is associated to task complexity or time constrains.
  • This model has the tend to emphasize the easy and short-term strategies which is not so good in all cases.
  • This model fails to understand the Demographic Differences in leadership.
  • Blanchard model fails to describe how a leadership style can be used when demographical difference is presented. As this model does not belives in a particular or ideal style for the leadership, so this theorey fails to predict what a leader should do when important issues like Demographical differences are presented.
