Draw a molecular orbital diagram for Mo(CO)6. What is the point group symmetry?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Molybdenum (Mo)is d-block element having atomic number 42 having electronic configuration [Kr]4d55s1

Mo = [Kr]4d55s1

1 1 1 1 1

1

                                    4d                                                                     5s

On formation of complex with CO(strong) ligand cofiguration Mo is [Kr]4d55s0

Mo(CO)6 structure is octahetdral and have Oh point group.

CO is very strong ligand so there is large crystal filled splitting of d -orbital so there is pairing of electron so we get low spin complex.Mo has zero oxidation state in this complex.
