Meiosis is a type of cell division in which the daughter cells
have half the number of chromosomes as compared to that of parent
cells.
It takes place in germ cells , and four haploid gametes are
produced. It also takes place in plants (spores).
It is important because to maintain a diploid set of
chromosomes in sexual reproduction, fertilisation of a diploid male
gamete with diploid female gamete would result into a tetraploid
zygote, which won't survive. However, due to meiosis , haploid
gametes are produced which produce a diploid zygote upon
fertilisation.
Also, meiosis leads to genetic recombination and introduces
variations in the population.
Without meiosis, sexual reproduction won't be possible and
there would be lesser genetic diversity overall.
