Draw a simple molecular orbital diagram for the following molecules. O22.... N2+.... C22- '''a. Is the ion paramagnetic or diamagnetic? b. What is the bond order in the ion? c. Would these ions have longer, shorter, or the same bond length as their neutral counterpart? d. Would these ions have stronger, weaker, or equal bonding strength as their neutral counterparts
Bond order
The number of bond present between a molecule which gives strength to that molecule is known as bond order
Bond length
The distance between the nucleus of two molecule is known as bond length.
Relationship between bond length and bond order
Now for the given molecules , the molevcular orbitals and thier bond order and bond lengths are given in the following figures
Now for the molecule O22- and O2(neutral counterpart), the small bond length will be obtained by O2 and have high strength than O22-
Now for the molecule N2+ and N2(neutral counterpart), the small bond length will be obtained by N2 and have high strength than N2+
Now for the molecule C22- and C2(neutral counterpart), the small bond length will be obtained by C22- and have high strength than C2
