Explain in your own words why blind patients depend on slowly adapting receptors such as Merkel cell complexes.
QUESTION: Why blind patients depend on slowly adapting receptors such as Merkel cell complexes?
SOLUTION:
MERKEL CELLS are a group of cells found in the dermis of skin of vertebrates. Since they are some specialized cells in the skin ,they play an important role in proper neural encoding of light touch stimuli, like merkel neurite complexes can sense the pressure and act like gentle touch receptors that initiate slowly adapting type 1 responses.
The BLIND PEOPLE neither can see the world nor read the books through their eyes, but they can achieve it through their finger tips. So the only sense they depend on is their TOUCH. So they are using BRAILLE SYMBOLS for their communication.
Actually Braille is nit a language. It is a system of raised dots used by the blind people or the people with low vision to read and write. We can express the languages like english, spanish,..or other languages, in the form of raised dots using braille symbols, to help the blind peoples to read using their finger tips. The braille symbols are made up of units of space called braille cells.
So, it is the touch stimuli that enables blind people to communicate. Hence adaptations of complexes like Merkel cell can help blind patients to read and communicate using braille symbols And they are depended on these type of cells in the daily life, to improve their quality of life.
