The conflict theory claims society is in a state of perpetual conflict because of competition for limited resources. It holds that social order is maintained by domination wherein a powerful minority rules based on their own interests. For example, conflict theory sees the purpose of educational institutions as maintaining social inequality and teaching those in the working classes to accept their position as a lower?class member of society.
Symbolic interactionism explains social behavior in terms of how people interact with each other via commonly understood meanings. According to this view, social structures are best understood in terms of such individual interactions. For example, when it comes to education the symbolic interaction perspective focuses on the interactions between students and teachers and how these help each develop a set of expectations for that student's performance.
