What terms to Azurara and the Portuguese use to refer to the enslaved captives? In what ways did their sue of such terms reflect centuries of Islamic influence in Iberia?
Portuguese annalist Gomes Eannes de Azurara composed accounts of
the early slave trade. His description of the division of captives
in 1450 reveal the prejudices of the Europeans and the horror of
the slave trade in chase of profits.
The Azurara believed in enslavement of African captives because
they considered that as soon as they understood their language,
they accommodated to Christianity with very little refusal. Then
their children's children would be born into
Christianity as if they had direct settel from Christ.
So that's why African captives surrender their families.
Slavery in Portugal, Portuguese Slaves were many different colours
and were from different zones. The chief colour of slaves was black
and they were most likely from India or Africa. They carried Slaves
to Portugal through the Atlantic slave trade.
Muslims who controlled Iberia had devided salves based on skin
colour. They regarded darker skined people from sub Saharan-Africa
minor and the most suitable for enslavement.Christian Iberians came
to hold related views on sub Saharan-African as well.
