How did enslaved people seize on the American Revolutionary period to seek freedom? And, to what extent were they successful?

Slavery was the major institution in America during 18 century.Most of the White Americans consider Slavery as normal and applaudes as positive thing.It never create any disturbance or feel itchy to white Americans.
During American revolution in 18th century, black people got an opportunity to free themselves and expand their rights.They participated in army with a motive of freedom.
Several laws were passed by British government that consider for abolition of Slavery.But their effect was very slow.Leaders of slave people in opportunity of war demands freedom, equal status in society. They pressurised British government during revolution.John Forten,Richard Allen,etc are few of the leaders.
About 5 percent of the army consist of black people.They join army with a feeling of patriotism and motive of freedom which was promised by British governor. They were paid equal wages as Americans do.
Governor of Virginia Lord Dunmore passed laws declaring freedom to those black who will join the British government.Thus they are successful in seeking freedom from whites in many efforts.
