State if each of the following processes release or required ATP: (ATP PRODUCED OR CONSUMED)

a. citric acid cycle

b. glucose forms two pyruvate

c. pyruvate forms acetyl CoA

d. glucose forms glucose-6-phosphate

f. First six reactions of glycolysis

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer =

State if each of the following processes release or required ATP: (ATP PRODUCED OR CONSUMED)

a. citric acid cycle = The ATP produced.

In citric acid cycle succinyl- CoA is converted into the succinate.the enzyme succinyl-CoA synthetase catalyzed this reaction.during this reaction GDP is converted into GTP.GTP is unstable and is immediately converted into ATP.

b. glucose forms two pyruvate = ATPs are produced.

this is glycolysis pathway. one glucose molecule is converted into two molecules of pyruvate. There is 4 molecules of ATPs are produced and 2 molecules of ATPs are used.

therefore there is net gain of 2 ATP molecules.

c. pyruvate forms acetyl CoA = ATP is not used not required.

Pyruvate is converted into acetyl CoA this reaction is called as pyruvate oxidation.catalyzed by pyruvate dehydrogenase. here one CO2 is released and 2 molecules of NADH2 are produced.

d. glucose forms glucose-6-phosphate = ATP is required.

this is the first step of glycolysis.glucose is converted into glucose -6 phosphate.here one ATP is required. ATP donates one phosphate to glucose to become ADP.

f. First six reactions of glycolysis - ATPs are used.

During first reaction of glycolysis glucose is converted into glucose -6 phosphate.here one ATP is required. ATP donates one phosphate to glucose to become ADP.

during third reaction of glycolysis  fructose 6 phosphate is converted intofructose 1, -6 bisphosphate.here one ATP is required. ATP donates one phosphate to glucose to become ADP.
