In giraffes, larger spots are most common, however sometimes giraffes have small spots. Small-spotted giraffes have a recessive mutation (l). The wild-type allele at this locus (L) encodes for large spots. A population of giraffes was sampled and their genotypes determined at the spot locus:
LL - 83
Ll - 57
ll – 35
TIP: Use a pen and paper for your calculations in order to answer the following questions and record your answers.
Q1. If we assume the population is in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) what are the expected frequencies of each genotype in the population? (1 mark)
LL = 0.42, Ll = 0.11, ll = 0.36
LL = 0.64, Ll = 0.32, ll = 0.14
LL = 0.50, Ll = 0.30, ll = 0.20
LL = 0.41, Ll = 0.46 ll = 0.13
LL = 1.3, Ll = 0.72, ll = 0.28
