The related condition which increases the production of adrenal gland hormones is Cushing syndrome.
Cortisol is secreted by adrenal gland and in Cushing syndrome cortisol levels are increased.
When adrenal gland is stimulated by adenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), adrenal gland secretes cortisol.
ACTH is produced by pituitary gland and released in response to
stimulation by corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH). One of the
main causes of Cushing syndrome is a cortisol-secreting adenoma in
the cortex of the adrenal gland. The adenoma causes cortisol levels
in the blood to be increased and produces negative feedback on the
pituitary from the high cortisol levels which causes ACTH levels to
be very low.
Excess of cortisol results in an increased gluconeogenesis rate and
insulin resistance is increased.
Cushing syndrome can also be caused by ingesting increased cortisol based medications like prednisone.
