Explain the key components and constructs of the PRECEDE- PROCEED model and the steps involved in the intervention mapping approach. Describe an example of how each of these models have been applied in public health practice. what similarities and differences exist between the intervention mapping and Precede-Proceed models? which approach do you favor and why?

Solutions

Expert Solution

#. Precede-proceed model:-

- Another model of health promotion

- Provides a structure for assessing health and QOL (Quality of Life) needs

- Provides a structure for designing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion programs

#. Precede: Phase 1

1. Determine Quality of Life or needs for a given population (Social assessment and situational analyses)

--> Trying to figure out what the problem issue is

--> Ex. "low back pain in PTs in acute care settings"

Precede: Phase 2

2. Identify health determinants of these problems (Epidemiological assessment)

--> Ex. "About 32-63% PTs report low back pain"; first episode w/in first years of practice; highest in rehab & acute care settings (who is effected & how big is the problem?)

Precede: Phase 3

3. Analyze behavioral and environmental determinants of these problems (Educational and Ecological assessment)

--> looking at what can cause the problem

--> Ex. Behavior = body mechanics & best care to patients; Environment = ergonomics & other's views

Precede: Phase 4

4. Identify factors that Predispose, Reinforce, and Enable the desirable behaviors and lifestyles (Intervention Alignment)

Ex) belief that PT's have knowledge to treat low back pain, so they should know how to prevent it

Precede: Phase 5

5. Ascertain (decide) which interventions would most encourage desired change in the above: behaviors or environments, or PRE factors (Administrative and Policy Assessment)

--> decide what you are going to do; come up with an intervention

Proceed Phases (Phase 6)

6. Implement interventions (from phase 5 of precede)

Proceed Phases (Phase 7)

7. Process evaluation - Evaluate intervention process

--> evaluate what the process was you were trying to do. Maybe you were happy with the process, but not necessarily the success. Happy with how you did an intervention, but maybe the outcome wasn't what you wanted

Proceed Phases (Phase 8)

8. Impact Evaluation - Evaluate impact of intervention on factors (PRE) supporting behavior change and on the change itself

--> What happened b/c of what you did

Proceed Phases (Phase 9)

9. Outcome evaluation - ultimate effects on health and Quality of Life in the target population

#. Steps involved in interventional mapping :-

Step 1: Needs Assessment

1. Establish and work with a planning group

2. Conduct the needs assessment and create a logic model of the problem.

3. Describe the context for the intervention

4. State program goal

Step 2: Program Outcomes and Objectives

1. State expected outcomes for behaviour of priority group and enviromental outcomes

2. Specify performance objectives for behavioural and enviromental outcomes

3. Select determinants and create matrices of change objectives

4. Construct matrices of change objectives

5. Create logic model of change

Step 3: Program Design

1. Generate program theme, components, scope, and sequence

2. Chose theory and evidence based change methods

3. Select or design practical applications to deliver change methods

Step 4: Program Production

1. Refine program structure and organisation

2. Prepare plan for program materials

3. Draft messages, materials, and protocols

4. Pretest, refine, and produce materials

Step 5: Adoption and Implementation Plan

1. Identify potential program users (adoptors, implementors, and maintainers

2. State outcomes and performance objectives for program use

3. Construct matrices of change objectives for program use

4. Design implementation interventions

Step 6: Evaluation Plan

1. Write effect and process evaluation questions

2. Develop indicators and measures for assessment

3. Specify the evaluation design

4. Complete the evaluation design

#. Difference :-

Intervention mapping is a protocol for developing theory-based and evidence-based health promotion programs. Intervention Mapping describes the process of health promotion program planning in six steps: the needs assessment based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model.

PRECEDE-PROCEED. The PRECEDE-PROCEED model is a comprehensive structure for assessing health needs for designing, implementing, and evaluating health promotion and other public health programs to meet those needs.

#. I will favor interventional mapping because it's based on theory and evidence

It is a comprehensive model which identifies influences on a health problem at both the broad and proximal level. It is divided into two main activities educational diagnosis (PRECEDE) and ecological diagnosis (PROCEED). PRECEDE: Predisposing, Reinforcing, and Enabling Constructs in Educational Diagnosis and Evaluation. PROCEED: Policy, Regulatory, and Organizational Constructs in Education and Environmental Development. There are nine phases to this model. These...
