A provider order is written for prochlorperazine (Compazine®) 7.5 mg IV q 4 hrs prn N/V. Prochlorperazine (Compazine®) is available in a prefilled syringe labeled 10 mg/2 mL. How many milliliters should be given?

Solutions

Expert Solution

ANSWER.

* Calculation of amount(ml) of Prochlorperazine required.

Formula = Desired dose / Dose in hand * Quantity.

             Here

                 Desired dose(D) = 7.5 mg.

                 Dose in hand(H) = 10 mg.

                         Quantity(Q ) = 2 ml.

      As per formula

          Amount (ml) of drug should be given = D / H *Q

                                                                        = 7.5 / 10 * 2

                                                                        = 0.75 * 2

                                                                        = 1.5 ml.
