Deferoxamine 500 mg IV q.4h. for two doses is ordered for a
patient with toxic iron ingestion. A 500 mg vial of deferoxamine is
available as a powdered medication with the following directions
for mixing:
Reconstitute the 500 mg vial with 2 mL of Sterile Water for
Injection. Dissolve powder completely before administration.
Reconstitute then further dilute in D5W, 0.9% NaCl, or LR. The
nurse is most correct to add 2 mL of diluent to the vial of powder,
then:
administer half of the dose to the patient q.4h. |
add this solution to a 50 mL D5W IV bag and infuse half of the dose q.4h. |
