"Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Global Citizenship"

You are the author of a popular CSR article. For this week’s discussion post, discuss the main reasons why Apple is or is not a socially responsible organization. List at least two examples of Apple’s actions that support your position. Be sure to use terms from Chapter 3 to demonstrate your understanding of corporate social responsibility.

Apple Inc. is a socially responsible organization. In the days of Steve Jobs, Apple was considered to be not so socially responsible but after Tim Cook took over in 2011, the company has been actively undertaking such activities. The company undertakes both environmental and social activities to contribute to the community. The company has a CSR committee which approves the CSR programs and projects undertaken by the company. The CGS programs and projects include suppoting the local community, empowering its employees, safety and gender equalities in the company, environment friendly energy and water consumptions, carbon emmissions policy, and waste reduction and recycling of products. Two of the initiatives undertaken by the company in CSR are discussed below:
a) Apple is known for its cost effective energy consupmtion. 93% of the total electricity used or generated by Apple is renewable and it is 100% renewable in 23 countries. The company focuses on reducing the power consumption and one such initiative is introduction of Mac Mini which is the most energy efficient desktop computer.
b) In 2011, the company launched a 'Global Volunteer Program' under which the employees of the company are encouraged to voluntarily support the local communities and a total of $78 million has been donated in charities and non profit organizations. Under the program, the cemployees are provided with the tools and training to volunteer events in their communities. The above program was revised in 2015 to let the employees choose the projects in their communities they would like to contribute in,
