Therapeutic communication is an important aspect in health care where patients /clients / relatives are new to the hospital environment and not a comfortable environment to be in . They might be scared to confront and discuss issues health related .It is very important to initiate a professional but a confidential understanding talk a dialogue between a client and a nurse .

Where we can get a complete history and to understand the patients queries and explain their queries too .

So therapeutic communication is an interactive communication (verbal/non verbal) between a nurse and the patient which aims to bring the client to comfort level to trust the health professional , bring safety and health and well being .

This task is an important and tedious which has to be carefully handled.

The nurse has to be a good listener, non judgmental , holds confidentiality of the client information and act appropriately to the clients verbal and nonverbal communication.

Road blocks to therapeutic communication could be – criticizing, judgmental, name calling, false hope, directing, commanding

Examples where road blocks could be seen in the clinical situation

Scenario:

When a clinically terminally ill patient with cancer gets her report .

Patient : hope the report is okay , and I will be able to see my children graduation .

Nurse: don’t worry , you will definitely see your children graduation and be a proud mom .
