Explain what is meant by “ionization energy.” List and describe two (2) reasons why the successive ionization energies (i.e., IE1, IE2, IE3, etc.) for any given atom always increase in magnitude.
the energy required to remove the valency electron from isolated gaseous atom is called ionization energy.
suppose if we remove 1 electron then it is IE1
by removing electron positively charged particle.
because of positively charge outermost electrons attracted strongly by nucleus.
so we need more nergy to remove second electron (IE2).
so IE2 is greater than IE1.
again same thing noe dipositively charged ion formed.
even more attraction is there between nucleus and outermost electrons. so we need much more energy to remove 3rd electron.
