Describe all five levels in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and provide (attach a link or image) 2 marketing examples. These examples should be different from the ones used in the text book. Recent marketing appeals that clearly use Maslows hierarcy in an effective (good) way and then one example that is clearly attempting to use Maslow's hierarcy of needs but NOT in an effective way.
Briefly explain how your examples relate to Maslow's hierarchy of needs and the marketing strategy in your examples.
1- According to Maslow, we have five categories of needs-
1- Physiological needs- The basic physiological needs are probably fairly apparent- these include the things that are vital to our survival.
Examples-1- Food
2- Water
3- Breathing
4- Homeostasis
2- Safety - The requirements start to become a bit more complex . At this level, the needs for security and safety become primary. So, this need for safety and security contributes largely to behaviours at this level .
Example- 1- Financial security
2- Health and wellness
3- Safety against accidents and injury.
3- Love - The social needs, At this level, the need for emotional relationships drives human behavior.
Example- 1- Friendships
2- Romantic attachments
3- Family
4- Social groups
4- Esteem - The need for appreciation and respect.
At this point, it becomes increasingly important to gain the respect and appreciation of others.
Example- 1- Self - esteem
2- Personal worth
5- Self - actualization - Referring to the need people have to achieve their full potential as human beings.
Example- 1- Talents
2- Capabilities
3- Potentialities
2- In this theory, higher needs in the hierarchy begin to emerge when people feel they have satisfied the previous need.
3- Although later research does not fully support all of Maslow's theory, his research has impacted other psychologists and contributed to the field of positive psychology.
4- Examples of Maslow's hierarchy of needs-
- Maslow posited that human behavior and decision- making are motivated by one of the five needs levels in his hierarchy. Applied to marketing theory, your ability to effectively appeal to one of these motivational drivers is a key determinant of your potential success.
5- Psychology and marketing often goes hand in hand.By applying theories of psychology, we can better understand consumer behaviorv and deliver more targeted and meaningful communications to our target audiences, and have a greater understanding of why we, as marketers and employees.
6- Successful marketing persuades a prospective client to purchase the product or service you are selling. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to appeal directly to one or more of his basic needs.
7- Many business students are taught to view Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a guideline against that success depends on meeting one of Maslow's identified needs.
Although other needs theories also have relevance, Maslow's needs hierarchy remains thr foundation for many fruitful psychological approaches to marketing.
8- Example- May be marketed successfully to those in the fourth - fifth level of Maslow's hierarchy because those people are driven by the needs for increased self- esteem and realizing their full potential.
