Two zones A and B are to be connected via a direct high speed route as daily traffic movement between the residents of 02 zones are causing congestion to existing network.

  1. Suggest and justify the type of survey needed to be conducted between 02 zones.
  2. If all the movement is considered to be inter-zonal only i.e. from A to B & B to A only. What kind of traffic volume measuring technique is suitable? Reason your answer.
  3. Design a household survey for estimating the trip originating from A to B (Assume the missing data).
    1. What kind of household surveying technique should be used if demographics are almost the same in the zone?
    2. What kind of household surveying technique should be used if demographics can be further classified within the zone?

Expert Solution

1) Since you are connecting two zones A and B with a new direct high speed route, you are going to invest in building that new route, so the you need to conduct a STATED PREFERENCE SURVEY to all the residents in both zones asking them whether they will be inclined to switch to the new high speed route. Now typically when you ask this questions, no body will say no. Most people will say yes I will try it out, and some people will say surely yes. But in reality, assuming there is no additional toll involved, all road users will try to test out the new direct high speed route.

So design a stated preference survey as follows

a) Would you be willing to shift to the new direct route - Yes/No

b)If yes, Suppose there is an additional cost to use the direct route, would you still be willing to use the new route

II) If all the traffic is from A to B and B to A only, the we need to collect 24hour counts. Collect it for each hour and like that for twenty four hours. So what you are essentially collecting is an Automatic Traffic Count (ATC). you can place a tube on the road and count the different vehicles in different categories that cross over that.

So our hourly count will include the following

# of cars, # of buses, # of heavy vehicles that cross from point A to point B

III) Design a household survey for estimating trips from A to B assuming demographics are same. Demographics are same means household size is same, #of automobiles in the house is same., income is same. So in these case you can design your household survey like this

a) How many working members are there in your house

b) How many trips per day do you make from A to B.

c) at what times do your trips start

d) Would you be willing to shift to the new direct route, if that is faster.

e) If answer to d is No- then stop dont proceed further

f) if answer to d is yes, then ask "would you be willing to shift if there is a cost or charge involved

g) Approximately what fixed one way toll price would you be willing to pay for a trip from A to B.

h) Would you be willing to pay this price at a monthly level, if that reduces your per day toll charge.

If demographics are different, then before asking questions in part iiia, you need to ask the following

a) What kind of household do you stay in, single family, apartments, high density residential, townhome

b)How many members are in your household

c) How many working members

d) What is the average income per month of the total household

e) How many private automobiles do you have in your household

e) What kind of trips do people in your house make daily from A to B

f) At what time do they usually make these trips.

In addition to above questions, ask all the other questions in part iiia)

Two identical containers are open at the top and are connected at the bottom via a tube of negligible volume and a valve that is closed. Both containers are filled initially to the same height of 1.00 m, one with water, the other with mercury, as the drawing indicates. The valve is then opened. Water and mercury are immiscible. Determine the fluid level in the left container when equilibrium is reestablished.
