Question 4
A connection between two or more computers on the same network connected via a cable and two computers in different parts of the world differs. Identify explain how the two connections types differ. Suppose that you are required to create a document to explain the different sections of DTE and DCE, by indicating the purpose of NIU and NID. Where would a wireless base station connect to a cellular network?
solution:
given data:
A connection between two or more computers :
DTE ( Data Terminal Equipment ):
It includes any unit that functions either as a source of or as a destination for binary digital data. At physical layer, it can be a terminal, microcomputer, computer, printer, fax, machine or any other device that generates or consumes digital data. DTEs do not often communicate information but need an intermediary to be able to communicate
DCE( Data Circuit Terminating Equipment):
It includes any functional unit that transmit or receives data in form of an analog or digital signal through a network. At physical layer, a DCE takes data generated by a DTE, converts them to an appropriate signal, and then introduces signal onto telecommunication link.
NIU- (Network Interface Unit):
A network interface unit (NIU) (sometimes called a network interface device) is a device that serves as a common interface for various other devices within a local area network (LAN), or as an interface to allow networked computers to connect to an outside network.
NID(Network Interface Device):
A network interface device (NID) can provide demarcation services for carrier networks, including carrier network termination and circuit protection along with test equipment access. These features are added to media and network protocol capabilities that are at the heart of a NID.
