describe the proceedures involved in providing nutrition via gavage, gastrostomy, and parenteral route
PROCEDURES INVOLVED IN PROVIDING NUTRITION VIA ;-
1.Gastrostomy ;- Placement of gastrostomy or jejunostomy tubes is also a procedure that may require conscious sedation or occasionally general anesthesia. An endoscope is used to visualize where the tube needs to go,and then a tiny cut is made in the abdomen to feed the tube in to the stomach or intestines. The tube is then secured to the skin. Many endoscopists choose to wait 12hrs before using the new feeding tube.Recovery may take five to seven days. Some people experience discomfort at the tube insertion site. But the incision is so small that it typically heals very well. You may recieve antibiotic to prevent infection.
2. Parenteral Route ;- In some cases, enteral feeding may not be an option. If you are at risk for malnutrition and don't have a functional GI system, you may need an option called parenteral feeding.Parenteral nutrition is administered from a bag containing the nutrients you need through tubing attached to a needle or a catheter. With TPN,healthcare provider places the catheter in a large vein, called the suoerior vena cava, that goes to the heart.
3. Gavage feeding ;- Liquid compounds may be administered directly in to the stomach of mice & rats via a technique called oral gavage. In this procedure, a stainless steel bulb tipped gavage needle or a flexible cannula or tube is attached to a syringe & used to deliver the compound in to the stomach.
