Why are Americans consuming more of their energy from sugar than might be healthy?

  • Busy and crazy schedules make the people avoid planned, healthy food and consume fast foods including soft drinks and sugary foods which contain large amounts of added sugar.
  • Sugary foods and drinks are readily available in every nook and corner of the country.

What recommendations do the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2015-2020 make in regards to sugar consumption?

  • Restricting added sugars to under 10 percent of our everyday calories . It  is around 12 teaspoons each day.

How can these recommendations be implemented?

  • Opt for water instead of beverages with added sugar.
  • Lowering segment of beverages with added sugar, its drinking frequency
  • Low-fat or fat-free milk .
  • Fruit or vegetable juices with recommended amounts of sugar.
  • Reduce the segment of grain-based food, dairy puddings and sweet appetizers.
  • Select canned fruits and sauces with limited sugar.
  • Replace with high-intensity sweeteners.
