Duties of nurse during chest intubation :

  • Prepare and handle equipments required for chest intubation under strict aseptic conditions.
  • Chest drainage system should be prepared according to the instructions.
  • Water sealed chamber should be filled upto 2cm mark by adding 45 ml of sterile water through suction port located on top of drain(water will change into blue colour).
  • Patient should be explained regarding the procedure and his/her vital signs to be noted before commecing.
  • Nurse should wear PPE.
  • Sterile insertion tray should be kept ready which contains - cleaning agent , chest tube and suture material.
  • Prepare local anaesthetic required and position the patient as advised by the physician.
  • During the process of chest tube insertion , continously monitor the vitals signs of the patient.
  • After completion of insertion , attach drainage system to chest tube as advised by physician.Chest drainage system should not be connected directly to wall suction.
  • All tubing connections between chest tube and chest drainage unit should be plastered with water proof tape(5cm on either side)
  • Start suction when ordered by physician.
  • Suction bellow is monitored to ensure that it is expanded.
  • Dressing should be applied around chest tube insertion.
  • Finally, chest tube size , insertion size , drainage and patients status should be documented.
