It is a surgical procedure in which all part of the large intestine is resected.

Pre op education

  • Explain the details regarding colectomy to patient and bystanders.
  • Pre operative fasting midnight on day before surgery.
  • Mechanical bowel preparation (some type of colectomy do not give bowel preparation )
  • Pre anaesthetic check up
  • Cardiology, ENT, dental etc consultation is needed
  • Skin preparation and take a shower on the evening before and morning the day of surgery.
  • Catheterization
  • Pre operative antibiotics
  • Blood test and urine test, x-ray and ECG
  • Smoking should be avoided
  • Usual Medication such as blood pressure and heart disease should take with sip of water

Post op education

  • Assess the vital sign
  • Check lung sound and bowel sound
  • Intravenous fluid administration
  • Oxygen administration needed immediately after surgery
  • Pain management achieved through IVly or epidural catheter
  • Deep breathing and coughing exercise (It stay alveoli open )while doing support the incision with pillows
  • Ankle exercise 10times each hour. It is done by moving feet towards and away from the body and move ankle in clock wise and anticlockwise direction.
  • Activities restrictions do not drive vehicles and other straneous activity.
  • Diet include water soluble fiber food to avoid constipation. Include more fruits and vegetables
