Performance appraisal is the process of assessing or monitoring a candidate or an employee based on their performance. An appraisal is solely an independent process and not linked to strategy or objective setting. It can improve the interaction between the management and employees and improve job satisfaction. The process overviews the employee’s role in the organization and their contribution to the success of the organization and eventually increases employee morale.
The main challenge of performance appraisal is the errors in rating and evaluation. The errors in rating and evaluation can affect the appraisal process in a negative way. The common rating errors are strictness or leniency, central tendency, halo effect, and recency of events (Deblieux, 2003; Rothwell, 2012). The rater must practice objectivity in appraisal process in order to ensure the fairness of evaluation.
Strictness or Leniency: Based on the supervisor's character they may rate the employees low or high. The individual differences affect the evaluation process. This may result in the result of high or low rating than they deserve and may contribute to employee dissatisfaction.
Central Tendency: Some evaluators like to rate the subordinates neither low or high. Instead, they rate everyone on an average scale
Halo effects: Another cognitive bias is the Halo/Horns Effect, where the evaluator ’s impression of the employee can substantially influence the appraisal process.
Recency of events: The evaluator may concentrate on the most recent events relevant to the employee while appraising the performance.
